Jan. 22, 2021 – The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Power Leadership Breakfast looked different this year. Guests viewed this year’s presentation virtually, and as of Jan. 21, views clocked in at more than 2,100 and still counting as people log in to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy.

This year’s theme was Justice, centered around Dr. King’s quote, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” The event included conversations with three community leaders: Angela Tucker, 199th Texas district court judge; Ed Drain, Plano police chief; and Dr. Neil Matkin, Collin College district president.

The virtual event also featured student presentations and performances, and the announcement of multiple scholarships.

The event honored the following students:

  • Calisha Germany received the Chief Ed Drain Community Scholarship.
  • Mercedes Johnson received a Huawei Technologies USA Inc. Scholarship.
  • Sara Kotsifis received a Huawei Technologies USA Inc. Scholarship.
  • Chloe Woodard received a Huawei Technologies USA Inc. Scholarship.
  • Jesse Omakun received a Huawei Technologies USA Inc. Scholarship.
  • Antionette Ellison received the Chi Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Scholarship.
  • Varaidzo Makina received the Plano North Metroplex Chapter of The Links Scholarship.
  • Jarod Parham received the Julia & Michael Dulan/Plano North Metroplex Chapter of The Links Scholarship.
  • Jaden McCullough received the Johnson Consulting & Dr. T.J. Johnson Scholarship.
  • Beauty Kabore received the Fred Moses Scholarship.
  • Caitlyn Taylor received the Kathy Cheng & Jerry Zimmerer Scholarship.
  • Elyce Wescott received the Cheryl Jones Scholarship.

The annual celebration is organized by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Power Leadership Breakfast Committee. Donations for the MLK scholarship fund are accepted throughout the year through the Collin College Foundation. For more information on making a gift to this fund, call 972.599.3145.
