March 21, 2023 Collin College will wrap up its Dignity Initiative series this year with two events in April. Both events are free and open to the public. The Dignity Initiative is a districtwide effort organized by the Collin College Committee Against Gender Violence and Oppression to educate and provide action steps to end gender-based oppression.

Labor Trafficking

Noel Mendoza from Mosaic Family Services will present on forced labor trafficking and the work her organization does assisting immigrants and refugees in crisis. The Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB) at the U.S. Department of Labor estimates 25 million people are trapped in forced labor around the globe. There are an estimated 234,000 victims of labor trafficking in Texas any given time, according to an article in the Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, the University of Texas at Austin.
In Their Shoes
Interactive workshop
April 13, 3:30-5 p.m.

The Dignity Initiative, in collaboration with Collin College Counseling Services, is hosting an interactive scenario workshop In Their Shoes, a nationally recognized public health education experience. Participants will explore real-world scenarios by making choices about issues such as dating violence, pregnancy, coercive or controlling behaviors, sexting, homophobia, and sexism. Via a series of letters and outcomes, participants will learn what happens to each character and will discuss methods of prevention for navigating similar issues in their own lives. Facilitators and counselors will be present to provide support and assistance. This program honors the lives of those who have lived the real scenarios and prepares participants for making better choices in the face of adversity.
