Construction Technology - Plumbing

Plumbers install and repair pipelines and pipe systems that carry water, steam, air or other liquids or gases. They work in residential, commercial, industrial or infrastructure construction and maintenance.

Program Overview

The purpose of the Construction Technology-Plumbing program is to prepare students for entry-level employment as a plumbers' apprentice. This program reflects a comprehensive foundation including theory, diagnosis, repair and maintenance with an emphasis on current procedures and best practices. Students will take courses in Plumbing Codes, Residential and Commercial Plumbing Fixtures, Field Measuring and Layout, and Pipe Fitting Equipment & Safety. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Tradesperson Plumbing Exam administered by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.

Career in Plumbing


• Install underground piping for water, gas, sewer, or storm drain systems
• Cut, thread, glue, solder, or weld pipes to specification using saws, torches, or pipe threaders
• Layout full scale drawings of pipe systems according to blueprints
• Inspect, examine and test installed systems or pipe lines
• Assemble pipe sections, tubing or fittings using couplings, clamps, bolts, cement, plastic solvent, caulking or soldering, brazing or welding equipment
• Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, dishwashers, water heaters, sinks or toilets, using hand or power tools
• Install automatic controls to regulate pipe systems
• Maintain or repair plumbing by replacing defective washers, replacing or mending broken pipes or opening clogged drains
• Install faucet flow restrictors, dual-flush or pressure-assisted flush toilets, or tankless water heaters
• Repair hydraulic or air pumps

• Water supply and distribution, wastewater, and other utility and municipalities
• Sales and plumbing supply houses
