Collin College professors served as the surrogate hands for students during a virtual SkillsUSA competition for the Texas Region in April. Automotive Technology Professors Sean Boyll and James Yervasi, Collision Technology Professor Stephanie Villasanti, and Department Secretary Laura Russell worked as a team to administer a hands-on engine repair station in which the contestants were required to identify engine timing marks and direct two individuals through the installation of the engine timing chain. Villasanti and Russell operated mobile phone cameras on gimbals so the contestants could see an over-the-shoulder point of view while Boyll and Yervasi acted as the students hands to complete the task. Villasanti and Russell also operated the other technology resources required to facilitate the virtual hands-on testing. In addition to assisting with the virtual test, Boyll was asked to create a written test for the event. SkillsUSA is a national organization dedicated to developing the country’s workforce through personal, workplace, and technical skills. In addition to training opportunities, SkillsUSA provides competitions like the one administered by Collin College faculty and staff to reward excellence among students. Thank you to Boyll, Russell, Villasanti, and Yervasi for assisting in this worthwhile program.
