Sept. 30, 2022 This fall Collin Colleges Dignity Initiative will offer three events in October. All events are free and open to the public. The Dignity Initiative is a districtwide effort organized by the Collin College Committee Against Gender Violence and Oppression to educate and provide action steps to end gender-based oppression.

The events planned for October are the following:

He Named Me Malala
Film screening and panel discussion
Oct. 4, 5:30-7 p.m.
Frisco Campus Conference Center

He Named Me Malala is an incredible documentary that chronicles the efforts of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai to foster educational opportunities for girls in Pakistan. When she was 15, Malala was singled-out, shot, and critically wounded due to her efforts. She miraculously recovered from her wounds and received global support for her efforts. The film documents Malala's life, her close relationship with her father who inspired her love for education, and her ongoing efforts to provide education for girls globally.

In Their Shoes
Interactive workshop
Oct. 18, 5:30-7 p.m.
Farmersville Campus, Atrium 4
Oct. 27, 5:30-7 p.m.
McKinney Campus Conference Center

The Dignity Initiative in collaboration with Collin College Counseling Services is hosting the interactive scenario workshop In Their Shoes, a nationally-recognized, public health education experience. Students will explore real-world scenarios by making choices about issues including dating violence, pregnancy, coercive or controlling behaviors, sexting, homophobia, and sexism. Via a series of letters and outcomes, participants learn what happens to each character and will discuss methods of prevention for navigating similar issues in their own lives. Facilitators and counselors will be present to provide support and assistance. This program honors the lives of those who have lived the real scenarios and prepares participants for making better choices in the face of adversity.

Struggles Women Face in the Workplace
Film screening and panel discussion
Oct. 20, 5-7:15 p.m.
Plano Campus Living Legends Conference Center

This film screening and panel discussion will address the struggles that women face in the workplace, particularly in male-dominated fields, like the sciences. The film is Picture a Scientist, a documentary that chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins and chemist Raychelle Burks lead viewers on a journey into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, we encounter scientific luminaries including social scientists, neurologists, and psychologists who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all. Panelists include Professor of Mathematics Aida LaPoint, and Professors of Biology Seema Endley, Vijaya Velamakanni, and Dr. Sukanya Subramanian.
